Effect of oral hexamethonium salts on gastric secretion.

چکیده
Hexamethylenebistrimethylammonium (hexamethonium) iodide (C6) has been shown by Paton and Zaimis (1949) to exert a blocking effect at the synapses of autonomic ganglia. In a previous paper (Kay and Smith, 1950) we have shown that this compound, when given intramuscularly, inhibits the gastric secretion and motility. In the present paper we give the results obtained with the same drug administered by mouth, and also compare the effects of the other halides. In the first series of experiments we have observed the effect of a single dose of the iodide salt on the gastric secretion; in the second, the effect of repeated administration; and in the third, the comparative effects of equivalent doses of the iodide, bromide, and chloride.

Effect of Esophageal Distention on Basal and Stimulated Gastric Acid Secretion in Rats
It is well established that the esophageal distention (ED) leads to gastric relaxation, partly by vago-vagal reflex, but till now, the effect of ED on gastric acid secretion has not been investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of ED on basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion. Methods: Adult male Wistar rats (200-240 g) were deprived of food but not the water 24 h b...
متن کاملRegulation of blood pressure levels by hexamethonium bromide and mechanical devices.
Probably the first studies of the pharmacology of quaternary ammonium compounds were made by Crum-Brown and Fraser in 1868. Burn and Dale (1915) found that, unlike nicotine, tetraethyl-ammonium chloride blocked autonomic ganglia without noticeable initial stimulation. Barlow and Ing (1948a and b), Paton and Zaimis (1948a and b), and Balaban et al. (1949) studied the properties of some chemical ...
متن کاملA comparison between the effects of hexamethonium and atropine in combination and of vagotomy with gastrojejunostomy on human gastric secretion.
This study records the gastric secretory response, using the Kay augmented histamine test, and compares "medical" vagotomy with atropine and hexamethonium with "surgical" vagotomy. The results suggest that it may be of value in predicting the effect of vagotomy with gastrojejunostomy.
متن کاملHexamethonium and Atropine in Combination and of Vagotomy with Gastrojejunostomy on Human Gastric Secretion
The considerable difference of opinion which exists regarding the surgical treatment of duodenal ulcer suggests that the ideal operation has not yet been devised. The advantages of a lower morbidity rate with vagotomy and gastrojejunostomy compared with partial gastrectomy are offset by the higher incidence of recurrent ulceration in the former procedure (Cox and Kerr, 1957; Everson, Hutchings,...
متن کاملA comparative study on the mechanism of action of morphine on gastric acid secretion in dogs.
While researching the mechanisms of gastric secretagogue action of mor phine, the effects of hexamethonium, atropine and secretin on morphine-induced gastric secretion were studied, and were compared with those on food-, histamine and tetrapeptide-induced gastric secretion in conscious dogs, and on histamine-, tetrapeptide and bethanecol-induced gastric secretion in anesthetized dogs. Effect of...
